Cultivators and Agricultural Labourers constitute the major work force of the District. They are 16.6% and 35.5% of the Total Workers respectively.
Gazole C.D. Block has highest number of villages (291) and Ratua-II C.D. block has the least number of villages (51) in the district.
The density of Population (Population per square km) of the District is 1,069 per square km which makes its rank 9th in the State.
The Sex Ratio of the District is 944 (No. of females per 1000 males) which is lower than the State’s Sex Ratio (950) and it ranks 11th in the State and retains same rank (11th) when only Rural Sex Ratio (949) is considered. In case of Scheduled Caste Population, it ranks 16th (931). For Scheduled Tribe Population the Sex Ratio is 993 and it ranks 8th in the State.

Malda District has experienced a sharp decline in Child Sex Ratio (CSR) from 964 in 2001 Census to 950 in 2011 Census. Although the State average has also declined from 960 in 2001 Census to 956 in 2011 Census, Malda District with the decline of 14 points, has recorded second largest fall in the State along with District Jalpaiguri, just after Koch Bihar (a decline of 16 points). It is noted that for urban areas in this District the CSR has nose-dived from 943 in 2001 Census to 882 in 2011 Census (A fall of 61 points).
The percentage of urban share of Population of Malda District has expanded from 7.3% (2001 Census) to 13.6% (2011 Census) of Total Population of respective Census.

In case of proportion of Child Population (0-6 years), Malda District ranks 2ndin the State (15.3%) and just behind the Uttar Dinajpur District (16.1%).
