COMMUNITY POLICING

Community policing is, in essence, a collaboration between the police and the community that identifies and solves community problems. With the police no longer the sole guardians of law and order, all members of the community become active allies in the effort to enhance the safety and quality of neighborhoods. Community policing has far-reaching implications.

Malda District Police works together with the law-abiding citizens of the district in creative ways to address the contemporary community issues throughout the year. Some of our initiatives are showcased here.

UTSARGA

Utsarga is an initiative of West Bengal Police to donate blood voluntarily. This is a yearlong programme where Malda Police held Blood Donation Camps in collaboration with Malda District Hospital Blood Bank. Utsargo is a true example of active community participation, It is held regularly in one police establishment where policemen as well as local residents donate blood voluntarily. The donor cards, so obtained, is kept at the local PS & Malda Control Room for emergency need of the local community.

SUKANYA

Project Sukanya is an initiative of West Bengal Police through its Community Policing. The object of this project is to generate a sense of self-confidence among the girls of schools, colleges to enable them to protect themselves from gender violence. This project provides qualified trainers of various stream of martial art, which includes Judo/ Taekwondo/ Kick Boxing/ Karate etc. to the selected girls’ students for a specified period. District Police monitor the project and evaluates the same periodically.

SWAYANSIDDHA

Swayangsiddha is a unique initiative to prevent human trafficking and child marriage, spearheaded by the West Bengal Police with active support and participation of community and district administration. The vision of this project is to build networks of aware, alert and pro-active individuals and groups to build safe communities for preventing human trafficking and child marriage. We took honest initiative to form such groups with girl’s student of the educational institutions and thus could prevent a good number of child marriages in this district.

NIRBHAYA

Women safety has always been one of the top priorities of Malda Police. The nature of women safety related problems has changed with the changing mores and norms in society. In past, we have initiated many new measures such as Women Police Station, crimes against women (CAW) cell, women help lines, etc. for ensuring safety of women and combating crime against women. After Nirbhaya incident, we are now more vigil to protect the modesty of our mothers and sisters.

SPORTS & CULTURE

Malda Police always encourages sports activities of the local youths at PS level for which, various games and sports are held in the field of football, cricket etc. Sampreeti Cup, an inter-district football tournament is also held every year to promote local youths. Similarly traditional cultural activities of the district are also supported by local police in a orchestrated manner.

NO POPPY CULTIVATION

Malda District is ill famous for such illegal cultivation of opium poppy plants. With the active co-operation of the civil administration, Panchayat, NGOs and others we are determined to achieve target of "Zero cultivation" in Malda district in every cultivation season. Recently drone is being used to identify illegal poppy fields. Malda police regularly organizes rallies, seminars, workshops, etc. to aware common people against poppy cultivation and use of drugs. Every year, on 26th of July, Malda Police observes world anti-drug day in collaboration with different NGOs.

SAFE DRIVE SAVE LIFE

Project Safe Drive Safe Life of West Bengal is a highly acclaimed programme which lowered down the road accident cases. As a part of ‘SDSL’, Malda Police regularly organises Road Safety Awareness, Camps in association with educational institutions, clubs, NGOs, Transport operators etc throughout the year. As a result, number of both fatal and non-fatal accidents could be reduced considerably in recent years in comparison to previous years.

HEALTH CHECKUP

We do organise regular Health Camps at different Police Stations in association with IMA and District /Sub divisional Hospital authority. Apart from basic health check-up of the local people, medical camps also held periodically for the poor and needy patients with specialised doctors of various streams like ophthalmology, cardiology, oncology etc. In some cases, we also provide medicine and mobility support to the economically weaker person.

TREE PLANTATION

The main object of Tree Plantation drive by the Police units of Malda is basically beautification of the PS campus. Now we are in a process to make it a community project with a view to combat various environmental issues like deforestation, erosion of soil, desertification in semi-arid areas, global warming and hence enhancing the beauty and balance of the environment. For this purpose, vacant government plots/ land adjacent to PSs and highways sides are being selected for such plantation.

CLEAN AND GREEN

To address the impending environmental disaster, Malda District Police has been working relentlessly to keep all police units clean and green. With the help of the local residents a good number of tree plantation programme have been undertaken in the monsoon season. We are vigil to protect the natural greenery with the help of the local community throughout the year. We also organise ‘No Plastic Campaign’, ‘Nirmal Bangla’ and other environmental awareness rallies at PS level.

CELEBRATIONS

Celebrating and observing important public events and social occasions with community is an integral part of police-public contact programmes. The objective of these initiatives is to build a higher trust level between police and common man of our society. Police officers from different police units of Malda District Police organise several events with the support of the public and also participate in them.

AWARENESS CAMP

The principal objective of awareness camps is to befriend the community with a view to make the common people realise and believe that they can play an important role in helping the police force to contain law and order problems and fight against crime. Malda Police regularly conducts various awareness camps to reach out to different sections of society and to encourage common people to actively take part to help police in law enforcement activities.
